In the first phase of the project CHAI built a ‘Community Hall’ for the people which is serving multiple purposes such as for conducting programmes, village meetings, functions, as a Balawadi presently being used by another organization ‘CREATE’. It can also be made use of as a means towards sustainability. ‘CREATE’ is running a ‘Balawadi’ with 20 children of varying ages from two to five years. One teacher and an Ayah is appointed in the Balawadi. Children are being provided with Nutritious food and play school method is used to educate the children.
Another Organization called ‘TSSS’ along with ‘Caritas India’ is providing houses for these 105 families. 90 houses are presently completed and rests are in the process. Once all the 105 houses are completed the families will shift to the new houses. The house comprises of a small hall, bedroom, kitchen and a toilet, it is comfortably planned for one family.
CHAI is focusing on the sustainability of the people. Hence more importance is being given to the holistic health aspects including Livelihood Opportunities such as Coir making and salt making and in improving the health status of the people at Poovanthoppu.
Presently 40 women have been trained in Coir making and 35 persons in Salt making. Two CHAI personnel including the project in charge visited Poovanthoppu for 8 days. From 8th March 2007 to 13th March 2007 and the following activities were undertaken:
