PROGRAMS
For the first three years, the Salt Street Foundation will be focusing on the village of Poovanthoppu, India, known locally as Salt Street. With the cooperation of Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI), the Foundation initially responded to several short term emergency needs that were the result of the December 2004 tsunami. With CHAI and the community’s involvement, a number of programs were developed that targeted key infrastructure needs of the village, with the goal of helping Poovanthoppu build a sustainable, self-sufficient community with a higher standard of living over the long term.
Phase I: Emergency Relief Fund
Program Funding Target: $5,000
Description: Funds were being provided for short term medical and nutritional supplies to support the village during the recovery from the tsunami.

Phase IIA: Comprehensive Rehabilitation for the
Village of Poovanthoppu:
Program Funding Target: $40,630
Description: Collaborative programs developed to improve the quality of life in the village. The objectives are to be met by developing and implementing action-oriented and sustainable programs that result in measurable improvements in health and educational status. The specific objectives identified:
Objective 1: To improve the health status of the people of Poovanthoppu village in Nagapattinam district, through education and ensuring access to available health facilities and schemes.

Objective 2: To educate and empower the underprivileged people of Poovanthoppu village of Nagapattinam District by forming community based organization and enable them to work towards improved quality of life.
Objective 3: To provide psychosocial support and appropriate recreational opportunities for creative outlet of energies and joyful living.

Phase IIB: Annual Support Fund for Continuation of Core Programs
Program Funding Target: $27,000 Annually
Goal: Provide sustainable livelihood opportunities to the people of Poovanthoppu, thus improving the quality of Dalit families.
Objective 1: To improve the health status of the people in Poovanthoppu through awareness generation programs with emphasis on Mother and Child.
